30 Jan January Newsletter
As we step into 2025, we do so with hope, determination, and a shared commitment to building a stronger, more inclusive community. Hope is what fuels our work—hope that together, we can create real change for those struggling with poverty, homelessness, and hardship.
This year, there are many ways to turn hope into action: walk with us at the Coldest Night of the Year in Bradford and Midland, join the conversation at our Poverty Reduction Task Group session, donate to power the work we do in collaboration with partners across the communities we serve, or share your voice as we shape the future of United Way Simcoe Muskoka through our strategic plan check-in.
Your support makes all the difference. Together, we can turn hope into lasting impact.

Home Relief Bank
The Home Relief Bank is a vital lifeline for lower-income tenants and homeowners facing financial challenges. By offering interest-free loans for rent or mortgage payments, it helps individuals maintain their housing during difficult times. With extended repayment terms, participants have the chance to improve their financial stability without risking their homes. As repayments cycle back into the program, more people in need receive support.
In collaboration with local community agencies, United Way Simcoe Muskoka delivers this assistance directly to landlords and mortgage holders, creating a strong support network across the region.
Why it Matters:
- Communities: Housing stability benefits everyone and prevents the high costs associated with homelessness.
- Other Renters: Lower turnover helps keep rental prices affordable.
- Landlords: Consistent payments reduce costs related to missed payments and tenant turnover.
- Social Service Agencies: Relieving the strain on shelters and other services.
Together, we can make a meaningful difference in the lives of those who need it most.
Employee Spotlight: Alex Hughes, Executive Assistant and Board Liaison
My journey with United Way Simcoe Muskoka began in 2018 through an RBC Career Launch placement, and I loved the organization so much that I came back. Now, five and a half years later, I’m grateful to work alongside incredible colleagues and volunteers who make a real difference. Outside of work, I enjoy reading, jigsaw puzzles, various fitness dance classes, and am constantly keeping a watchful eye on my two mischievous cats, Fern and Fig.
