United Way’s Call to Action: Building Strong Communities Amid Global Uncertainty

What a difference a matter of months makes.

The next federal election was expected to be a referendum on the Liberal Party’s previous three terms in office.

For many, that changed on January 20th, 2025.

The election of Donald Trump quickly shifted the conversation from one focused on domestic issues to that of foreign relations – specifically Canada’s relationship with the United States. Threats to our economic and national sovereignty have whittled this election down to essentially one question: who is Canada’s best bet to stand up to the Trump Administration.

And of course, this is important.

We need a strong Federal Government that will defend Canada’s interests in the face of existential threats posed by our neighbours to the south. But we also will need a government that will respond swiftly and sufficiently to domestic issues here at home that we can expect to be intensified by a trade war.

As a non-partisan charity committed to strengthening communities, United Ways across Canada are calling on our next Federal Government to take the following actions in response to the threat of tariffs:

  1. Ensure adequate funding for essential community services that support individuals and families struggling to meet their basic needs. We know that vulnerable populations are disproportionately impacted by challenging economic times, and a strong, resilient community services sector will be necessary to respond to anticipated increased needs.
  1. Expand income supports for those facing layoffs due to tariffs and uncertain economic conditions. It is critical that appropriate social benefits are in place to prevent even more Canadians from entering a state of poverty.
  1. Invest in projects such as community hubs, community centres, and non-profit housing. This is an investment that not only strengthens communities and the organizations that serve them but also creates job opportunities and fortifies our economy.
  1. Unlock the generosity of donors. Just as they were asked to do during the pandemic, charities are going to be required to do even more than they are already doing, and we need to make it as appealing as possible for those with the means to do so to continue to support them financially.

This is an election unlike any other we have seen in generations. Our economy, our sovereignty, our country is at stake. We need a strong Federal Government that will not only stand up for Canada on the global stage but will also take appropriate action here at home to support Canadians struggling to make ends meet. Your United Way is committed to working with our next Federal Government through a shared commitment to build strong, resilient communities across Simcoe Muskoka.
