Why Should You Dodge for a Cause?

Every day, more than 60,000 residents of Simcoe Muskoka face the hardships and obstacles caused by poverty. These hurdles can make everyday necessities out of reach; paying for utilities, buying healthy food for your family, securing transportation to a job or finding affordable childcare are just some of the difficulties that poverty creates.

When you Dodge for a Cause, you are supporting the poverty alleviation and social inclusion work that United Way Simcoe Muskoka facilitates across our communities. This work can help the most vulnerable in Simcoe Muskoka and unlock the potential of those experiencing poverty.

Whether it be helping with life’s everyday struggles through the Urgent Needs Fund or addressing gaps in social services, your participation in Dodge for a Cause will help those who need it most.

FAQ

Have some questions about the tournament or need clarification on some of the details? Check out our frequently asked questions below or email Laara at LLosier@UWSimcoeMuskoka.ca

Are there age requirements?

Yes! All participants must be 19 years of age or older by March 21, 2020. Unfortunately, due to insurance reasons, we cannot allow anyone under 19 to participate in this tournament. And no, that doesn’t mean that there will be alcohol at the event and bringing alcohol is strictly prohibited (we’re playing at a school, after all).

Can I register a team of less than 10?

Absolutely! You need a minimum of 5 to register a new team and other players you recruit can join your team afterwards by selecting the “Join an Existing Team” option while registering.

We don't have 5 people but would like to play!

Sometimes it can be difficult to find five friends who want to dodge, dip, duck, dive and dodge. Email Laara at LLosier@UWSimcoeMuskoka.ca and we will add you to the waiting list. We’ll do our best to find you a spot!

Is there a registration fee?

It costs $10/person to register someone. You can register multiple people at once when making a new team and individuals can join a team after a team is made.

Can I register and pay for another player on my team?

Of course! You can register other players when you create a team –  as long as you know their first and last name, their personal email and their phone number. Registration won’t be completed if the same email is used for multiple players.

Can my friends and family support me?

You bet! All registered participants will be provided a pledge form and envelope to fundraise for the tournament. Alternatively, for those who want to donate online, your supporters can choose the “Donate to a Player or Team” option on the form located at uwsimcoemuskoka.ca/dodgeball. There they can choose a team to support or can type in the name of an individual.

There will be an award and prizes for the Top Fundraiser (individual) and the Top Fundraising Team!

Are uniforms/costumes mandatory?

Not at all! Costumes are strongly encouraged to add team spirit, make the day more fun and hopefully snag the Best Costume prize, but we understand that not everyone can get a costume for this event – or might not want to wear one at all!

What can our team do in between matches?

Even if your team has some bad luck in your first match, there will still be some downtime while other teams play. Luckily, we will have loads of fun activities for you to participate in and we encourage your team to cheer on others to vie for the Team Spirit prize!

What can we win prizes for?

There are a bunch of prizes up for grabs, awarded for both play and non-play reasons. These include:

  • Tournament Champions
  • Runners-Up
  • Second Division Winners
  • Most Team Spirit
  • Best Costumes
  • Top Fundraiser
  • Top Fundraising Team
What will my fundraising be used for?

All proceeds from the tournament will go towards the important, life-changing work of United Way Simcoe Muskoka. Through initiatives like the Urgent Needs Fund, UWSM is helping to alleviate the impact of poverty and help those experiencing its effects to unlock their full potential and live their life to its fullest.
